John Butt
Conductor, organist, harpsichordist and scholar John Butt is a leading expert in the field of historically informed performance, with a particular interest in Johann Sebastian Bach’s music. John Butt was educated at Cambridge University and is currently Gardiner Professor at the University of Glasgow.
In the early 1990s, when he was associate professor at Berkeley University, Butt led rehearsals of its chamber choir for the Dutch early music pioneer Gustav Leonhardt to conduct: ‘I learned a lot when preparing choirs for him in my California days’, Butt later remarked.
Butt has been music director of Edinburgh’s Dunedin Consort since 2003. Together they have given countless highly praised performances of baroque music and recorded many albums, to equal acclaim. Besides continuing to be active as a solo organist and harpsichordist, Butt has been a guest conductor with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The English Concert, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, among others.
In the 2022/23 season Butt will makes his Concertgebouw Orchestra debut conducting Bach’s St Matthew Passion.
