Sebastián Almánzar
Born in Colombia, Sebastián Almánzar was initially trained as a chorister and choirmaster. In 2012, he started his studies in orchestral conducting with Cecilia Espinosa and Alejandro Posada at EAFIT University in Medellín, having the opportunity to work with the EAFIT Symphony Orchestra, the Iberacademy Orchestra and the Medellín Philarmonic Orchestra.
Almánzar then studied with Simeon Pironkoff at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, conducting the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester at the Musikverein to conclude his master's in 2023. In addition, he conducted the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège and the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra.
He participated in masterclasses led by Andres Orozco-Estrada, Marin Alsop, Roberto Gonzales-Monjas, Olivier Grangean and Philippe Augin.
In the current season, Almánzar has been assistant to Marie Jacquot with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Basque National Orchestra, and in a production of Haydn's Die Schöpfung with the Opéra national de Lorraine.
Almánzar has been a prizewinner in several competitions, including the 2017 and 2019 competition of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá. In February 2020 he was awarded the second prize at the European Union Conducting Competition in Bulgaria.
