André de Ridder is the Generalmusikdirektor of the Theater Freiburg. He is in demand internationally for his impressive stylistic versatility, taking him to orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre de Paris.
At the Theater Freiburg, De Ridder recently led new productions of Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel, Verdi's Don Carlos and Mozart's Die Zauberflöte as well as symphonic works such as Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and Mahler’s Symphony No.5. He returned to Staatstheater Stuttgart for revivals of the 2019 production he premiered of Adams' Nixon in China, and conducted Glass' Einstein on the Beach in Basel and Paris. He is the curator of ‘Unclassified Live’ at London’s Southbank Centre, a series of genre-defying performances featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra.
The German conductor has formed close relationships with some of the most prominent composers of our generation, including Michel van der Aa, Daníel Bjarnason, Nico Muhly and Kaija Saariaho.
In 2013, De Ridder founded s t a r g a z e, performing projects ranging from Bach to avant-garde rock and electronics in leading concert halls.
De Ridder’s discography includes an album of orchestral music by Bryce Dessner and Jonny Greenwood and the hugely successful Four Seasons Recomposed by Max Richter, which was awarded an ECHO Klassik Classic Without Borders award. De Ridder also acted as producer on the release of Damon Albarn's Africa Express Presents: In C Mali.
He conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2016 (Pop Art featuring Son Lux and soprano Claron McFadden) and in 2022 (concerts at Westergas Amsterdam featuring Damon Albarn and soloists from Mali and Burkina Faso).
