About this concert

Don Quixote is completely lost! The knight is not on a proud horse but on an old nag, a castle turns out to be a rickety inn, and the giants he fights are actually windmills. He does it all for Dulcinea, his beloved. But does she really exist? And is Don Quixote a real knight?

In the symphonic poem Don Quixote by Richard Strauss, the cello portrays the main character and the viola portrays his servant. For this occasion, musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra will play a special arrangement for chamber ensemble, written by Giel Vleggaar. The text and production are by Lotte van Dijck. And of course, it’s all based on Cervantes’s legendary novel – still a winner 400 years later!
