About this concert
Antonín Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony (‘From the New World’) is one of the most popular symphonies ever written. After having been appointed artistic director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York, the composer discovered the musics of Native Americans and African Americans, and incorporated folk melodies in the symphony. The music evokes grand American vistas, yet also betrays a yearning nostalgia for Dvořák’s own Bohemian homeland.
Prokofiev wrote his spectacular Piano Concerto No. 2 a few years before he, too, decided to seek refuge in the United States. This spectacular concerto marks the Concertgebouworkest debut of Alexandre Kantorow, the celebrated winner of the prestigious 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition.
Sokhiev opens the concert with Joey Roukens’s Chase, composed in 2013 for the Concertgebouworkest and inspired by a chase scene in a film.
