The Concertgebouw Orchestra has established a sterling reputation for itself when it comes to performances of Wagner’s operas in concert version. Now Jaap van Zweden is conducting Act I of Die Walküre, a high point in Wagner’s Ring cycle. In stormy weather, the hunted hero Siegmund arrives exhausted at the home of the warrior Hunding and his wife Sieglinde. Siegmund and Sieglinde instantly have a strong bond and slowly realise they are siblings… This intensely romantic music, including the blissful aria ‘Winterstürme wichen dem Wonnemond’, leaves few unmoved.
