Visiting Berlin's Konzerthaus during the 2025 summer tour, Klaus Mäkelä conducts the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Bartóks indestructible Concerto for Orchestra and Berio’s homage to Schubert, Rendering.

About this concert

Luciano Berio, one of the most important composers of the twentieth century, was born 100 years ago. His fascinating Rendering is based on Schubert’s fragmentary sketches for a tenth symphony. Berio was commissioned to compose this fascinating ‘homage to Schubert’ by the Concertgebouw Orchestra, which performed the world premiere in 1990 under its then chief conductor Riccardo Chailly.

After the interval, we will be performing Bartók’s irresistible Concerto for Orchestra, the unexpectedly powerful, vibrant masterpiece that Bartók produced in his final dark years – a pure celebration of life itself.
