Alan Gilbert
Alan Gilbert studied at Harvard University, the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Juilliard School of Music in New York, launching his career as assistant conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra. Gilbert started his position as the new chief conductor of Hamburg’s NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in September 2019. It follows his tenure as principal guest conductor for more than a decade, in which they performed many concerts and embarked on an extensive Asian tour.
Gilbert’s new position follows on the heels of his truly transformative eight-year tenure as music director of the New York Philharmonic. The American conductor previously served as music director of the Santa Fe Opera and of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (where he currently is conductor laureate). As a guest conductor, Gilbert is frequently invited to conduct many acclaimed orchestras. In recent seasons, he made guest appearances with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, amongst others. He also led a production of Schoenberg’s Moses and Aaron at the Dresden Semperoper and Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt at La Scala in Milan.
Since his debut in 2003 Gilbert has made several guest appearances with the Concertgebouworkest. In 2017 he conducted the orchestra in works by Bernstein, Roukens and Sibelius, in September 2020 he returned for an all-Gershwin programme.
