Susanna Mälkki

Born in Helsinki, Susanna Mälkki started her career as a cellist. She studied conducting with Jorma Panula and Leif Segerstam. From 2006 until 2013 she served as chief conductor of the Ensemble intercontemporain and from 2013 until 2016 she was principal guest conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisboa.

Mälkki has served as chief conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra since 2016 and principal guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 2017. Highly in demand as a guest conductor, she appears regularly with leading orchestras throughout Europe and North America, such as The Cleveland Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Major operatic appearances have included the Metropolitan Opera and the Opéra National de Paris. With the latter, she successfully performed Boesmans’ Yvonne, princesse de Bourgogne (2020), Dvořák’s Rusalka (2019) and the world premiere of Francesconi’s Trompe-la-Mort (2017).

Recognised for her significant contribution to music, Mälkki’s awards include the Pro Finlandia Medal of the Order of the Lion of Finland – one of Finland’s highest honours.

Susanna Mälkki made her first guest appearance with the Concertgebouworkest in 2008, and returned with the orchestra twice, in both cases impressing audiences and critics with twentieth-century and contemporary programmes.
