Elise Besemer-van den Burg
Elise Besemer-van den Burg took up the violin at the age of five. As part of the Young Talent Department at the Rotterdam Codarts Conservatory, she studied with Hélène van Leeuwen and, from the age of twelve, with Coosje Wijzenbeek. Besemer completed a bachelor’s degree with Jaring Walta at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague in 2018 with the highest honours. She continued her studies there with Jaring Walta and Tjeerd Top, and has participated in masterclasses with Stephan Picard, Alexander Pavlovsky, Liza Ferschtman and Margreet Honig.
Elise was a finalist in the 2016 Oskar Back Dutch Violin Competition. She previously won first prize at the 2011 Davina van Wely Violin Festival, the competition of the Foundation for Young Musical Talent in the Netherlands (in 2006 and 2007), and the jury and audience prizes at the 2006 Gergiev Festival. She was nominated for the GrachtenfestivalPrijs in 2017.
Elise has given solo performances of works including Sibelius’s Violin Concerto with the orchestra of the Royal Conservatoire.
She participated in the Academy of the Concertgebouw Orchestra during the 2016–17 season, after which she frequently performed as a substitute with the orchestra. She joined the second violin section of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2019.
An avid chamber musician, she performed regularly with pianist Laurens de Man and was a founding member of the Arkovsky Sextet.
Elise plays a violin built by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume in Paris ca. 1886 which is on loan to her from the Dutch National Musical Instruments Fund.
