Opening Night
After the success of Opening Night 2021 on Dam Square, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s season opener will again be taking place at a public space in Amsterdam: the Westerpark. The open air concert can be attended for free on Friday 9 September at 8.30 p.m., and everyone is welcome. Maria Fiselier will present the television registration from Westerpark. AVROTROS will broadcast the concert on Dutch public television and radio; live on NPO Radio 4 and, from 10.15 p.m., on TV channel NPO2.

On this festive concert conducted by Alain Altinoglu, two soloists will be sharing the stage: the Swedish clarinettist Martin Fröst, artist in residence with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson. After an energetic kick-off with John Adams’s Short Ride in a Fast Machine, Ravel’s sultry, jazz-influenced Piano Concerto in G is blending seamlessly with a sun-drenched mosaic of dances for clarinet and orchestra. The concert closes with the warm-blooded Latin sounds of Bernstein’s ever popular West Side Story.
