Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra to perform Shostakovich and Dutch premieres of Morricone and Thorvaldsdottir
Omar Tomasoni will be the soloist in Ennio Morricones’ trompet concerto UT, Santtu-Matias Rouvali conducting
On 22, 23 and 24 March, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will perform Ennio Morricone’s trumpet concerto UT under the baton of Santtu-Matias Rouvali. This Dutch premiere will feature Omar Tomasoni, principal trumpet player of the orchestra. In addition, the programme features Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 15 and another Dutch premiere, that of Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s Metacosmos.
Widely known for his iconic film soundracks, Ennio Morricone (1928-2020) was also a trumpet player and the composer of a large number of autonomous works for the concert stage, many of which have unconventional instrumentations. In his 'trumpet concerto' UT, a virtuoso solo part for trumpet in C is juxtaposed with timpani, bass drum and a string orchestra. The Concertgebouw Orchestra and its principal trumpet player, Omar Tomasoni, will give the first ever performances of this work in the Netherlands. The concerts will mark the second time Tomasoni is performing with his orchestra as a soloist: in 2014 he shared the spotlight with pianist Yuja Wang in Shostakovich’s Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings (also known as Piano Concerto No. 1).
Santtu-Matias Rouvali, who has conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra with great success on several occasions since his debut in 2020, will open the concert with the Dutch premiere of Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s colouful orchestra piece, Metacosmos. After the interval, the orchestra will perform Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 15.
