Simon Van Holen

Simon Van Holen received his first bassoon lessons at the age of eight. From 2003 on he studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, later at the Robert Schumann Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf with Gustavo Núñez, where he graduated in 2010. Here he was also awarded with the DAAD Förderpreis for foreign students on account of his extraordinary artistic skills. He took masterclasses from Brian Pollard, Klaus Thunemann, Dag Jensen, Stefan Schweigert, Sergio Azzolini and Ole Kristian Dahl.

Van Holen was invited for the Zermatt Festival Academy and the Gustav Mahler Akademie. A scholarship of the foundation Villa Musica Rheinland-Pfalz allowed him to pwerform chamber music with musician such as Menahem Pressler, Ingo Goritzki and Sergio Azzolini.

Simon Van Holen was a member of the European Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and was accepted to the orchestra academy of the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker in 2007.

As a substitute he played in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra de l´Opéra de Rouen Haute Normandie and the Norrköpings Symphony Orchestra. 

In 2011 Simon Van Holen was appointed solo contrabassoonist at the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker and since 2012 he holds the same position at the Concertgebouworkest. In 2013 he was awarded the Prix de Salon, the annual prize awarded to Concertgebouworkest members by the business circle of the orchestra. 

Since 2012 Simon Van Holen has been teaching bassoon and contrabassoon at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and regularly gives masterclasses in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and South-Korea.

At the end of 2020, Simon Van Holen started using a new Heckel double bassoon, specially built for him. This contrabassoon from the collection of the Foundation Concertgebouwokest could be purchased thanks to contributions from the Belgische Vriendenvereniging.
