The versatile Klaus Mäkelä
As artistic partner to the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Klaus Mäkelä will conduct a variety of programmes in the 2024-24 season, including Mahler’s Symphonies No. 1, the start of a Schumann symphony cycle. In addition, he will lead the orchestra’s Christmas Matinee (featuring Richard Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben!) and the Annual Gala concert. Mäkelä’s repertoire for next season spans four centuries, ranging from 16th century music by John Dowland to contemporary composers such as Unsuk Chin and Anders Hillborg. And we will be performing Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and a newly commissioned work by Ellen Reid, both in Amsterdam and on tour in the United States.
Amsterdam 750
We will celebrate the 750th birthday of our city Amsterdam performing two concerts in our own A and D series and one in the ZaterdagMatinee series, featuring soprano Katrien Baerts, mezzo-soprano Tania Kross and the Groot Omroepkoor. Besides songs from the Antillean opera Katibu di shon (‘Slave and Master’) we will perform Louis Andriessen’s De stad van Dis (‘The City of Dis’) and a newly commissioned work by Calliope Tsoupaki. In Theo Verbey’s Notturno, the whole world resounds in an Amsterdam apartment.
Schönberg 150 years
September 2024 will mark 150 years since Arnold Schoenberg was born. The Viennese composer has so much to offer! After our performance the grand Gurre-Lieder last February, in September we will play the beautiful late romantic Verklärte Nacht (‘Transfigured Night’) in September, followed in October by a unique Schönberg triptych in a stunning mise en espace provided by our creative partner Pierre Audi, and featuring soprano Barbara Hannigan in a leading role.
Great maestros
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra works with the most eminent conductors. Riccardo Chailly crowns our Bruckner cycle with the Ninth Symphony, Jaap van Zweden conducts Bruckner's Fourth. Honorary guest conductor Iván Fischer focusses on Prokofiev. Leonardo García Alarcón returns to the orchestra to conduct Bach and Handel, Semyon Bychkov will lead Shostakovich, and we will play music by Richard Strauss and Puccini under the baton of Manfred Honeck. Karina Canellakis, Han-Na Chang, Yu Lu, Riccardo Minasi, Vasily Petrenko and Simone Young will all be making their first appearance with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Choose the E series: The Great Maestros
Essentials
The Essentials series introduces you to the masterpieces you will be happy to know, performed by the world-famous Concertgebouw Orchestra and complete with a lively introduction by the incomparable Thomas Vanderveken. At Essentials we welcome a new generation of music lovers, and the concerts typically have a pleasant informal atmosphere.
Famous soloists
Next season you will hear world-famous soloists at the Concertgebouw Orchestra, including the singers Joyce DiDonato, Renée Fleming and Tania Kross, and the pianists Maria João Pires and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Janine Jansen will be the soloist in Britten's Violin Concerto, with which she made her debut with us twenty years ago. Violinists Augustin Hadelich and Lisa Batiashvili will also be performing with us. In addition, our own principal flutist Emily Beynon, principal oboist Ivan Podyomov, principal cellist Tatjana Vassiljeva-Monnier and principal violist Santa Vižine step into the spotlight.
Klassiek voor kinderen
The orchestra is developing more and more educational activities for the youngest generations, including school concerts, children's concerts and the Family Series, which boasts three attractive concerts complete with a fun introduction.
Music of our time
The Concertgebouw Orchestra has always enjoyed collaborating with contemporary composers. In the 2024-25 season, the orchestra will play newly commissioned works by Guillaume Connesson, Anders Hillborg, Liza Lim, Seung-Won Oh, Ellen Reid and Calliope Tsoupaki. Works by Unsuk Chin and Bernd Richard Deutsch which were recently composed and successfully premiered will be performed again. Composer and conductor Matthias Pintscher will conduct works by himself and other composers, a programme which allows cellists Nicolas Altstaedt and Alisa Weilerstein to shine.
Bruckner cycle
Of course we continue our symphony cycle, celebrating Anton Bruckner’s 200th birthday. Under the baton of renowned conductors we will be performing Bruckner’s symphonies Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 6 next season, topped off with Symphony No. 9 conducted by our conductor emeritus, Riccardo Chailly.
Bijlmer Klassiek
The Concertgebouw Orchestra takes great pleasure in organising the successful Bijlmer Klassiek series in collaboration with the Bijlmer Parktheater in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. A third season of adventurous cross-over concerts is just around the corner!
