Zemlinsky’s Maeterlinck Lieder
Alexander von Zemlinsky, a passionate lied composer, wrote his six Maeterlinck Lieder in 1910-13. Maeterlinck’s poetry conjures up the magic of a lost world. Many of his dramas depict the fate of young girls, blindfolded, abandoned, molested or left to languish in dark cellars. Zemlinsky’s music provides an appropriate atmosphere for the poems. You can watch the performance of Zemlinsky’s Maeterlinck Lieder with or without David Robertson’s distinct explanation.
