Yong-Jun Lee

Yong-Jun Lee joined the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's cello section in August 2024. 

Born in South Korea, he began his musical education at age 7. After his studies at the Purcell School of Music with Pal Banda, he received a full scholarship to undertake his undergraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music where he studied with Mats Lidström. He then pursued his master’s degree with Stephan Forck at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin. Between 2022 and 2024, Yong-Jun Lee participated in the academy of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. He took masterclasses with Mario Brunello, Gary Hoffman, Steven Doane and Colin Carr.

Lee has performed widely as a soloist in the UK, most notably at Cadogan Hall and Wigmore Hall. He is a committed chamber musician, and has made appearances at the Wigmore Hall, St James’ Piccadilly and Martin-in-the-Fields. 

Lee collaborated with renowned artists such as Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Clio Gould, Josef Spacek, Ofer Falk and Dominic Grier.

Yong-Jun Lee has frequently performed with the Royal Academy Symphony Orchestra as principal cellist, including at a BBC Proms concert at the Royal Albert Hall. In the 2029-20 season, he appeared with both the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra as part of a string experience project.
