A whole weekend of music from the United States: we are sharing recordings of chamber music performed by our musicians, streaming the previously scheduled orchestral concerts from the Concertgebouw and kicking things off on Friday evening with an online pub quiz featuring chamber music.

One of the three previously announced orchestral programmes will take a slightly different form. Owing to Covid-19 restrictions, Paavo Järvi is unable to conduct the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The orchestra is very grateful that Klaus Mäkelä has agreed to stand in for him at such short notice.

This particular concert programme has in part been changed. Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (‘From the New World’), which he composed in New York, now concludes the concert. The symphony is preceded by two originally scheduled works – Julia Wolfe’s Fountain of Youth (Dutch premiere) and Aaron Copland’s Clarinet Concerto featuring Calogero Palermo, the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s principal clarinettist.

The other two concert programmes will be presented as previously announced. Under the direction of Susanna Mälkki, the Concertgebouw Orchestra will be performing Julia Perry’s Short Piece for Orchestra, John Adams’s Violin Concerto with soloist Leila Josefowicz, and Charles Ives’s Symphony No. 2.

Stéphane Denève will be conducting Jennifer Higdon’s blue cathedral and Peter Lieberson’s moving Neruda Songs with mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor, followed by iconic film music by composers including Erich Wolfgang Korngold (The Sea Hawk), Bernard Herrmann (Hitchcock’s Vertigo) and John Williams (E.T. and Star Wars).
