Barbara Hannigan
Soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan is an artist at the forefront of creation. Her artistic colleagues include Simon Rattle, Kent Nagano, Andris Nelsons, Esa Pekka Salonen, Katie Mitchell and Kirill Petrenko. The late conductor and pianist Reinbert de Leeuw has been an extraordinary influence and inspiration on her development as a musician.
Hannigan has shown a profound commitment to the music of our time, having given the world première performances of over 85 new creations. Hannigan has collaborated extensively with such composers as Pierre Boulez, John Zorn, Henri Dutilleux, György Ligeti, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Gerald Barry, Brett Dean and George Benjamin.
In the 2020-21 season, Hannigan premiered a new live video production of Jean Cocteau’s La Voix Humaine in which she both sings and conducts, as part of her residency with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. The 2021-22 season brought her return to La Monnaie in Brussels in the much-awaited remount of her 2012 production of Bergs Lulu.
Hannigan’s album as both singer and conductor with LUDWIG, Crazy Girl Crazy (2017), won numerous awards, including a Grammy and an Edison award. Other recent albums include Vienna: fin de siècle, and Erik Satie’s Socrate, both with Reinbert de Leeuw.
Her commitment to the younger generation of musicians led her to create the mentoring initiatives Equilibrium Young Artists in 2017 and Momentum: our Future Now in 2020.
In the 2022/23 season Barbara Hannigan makes her highly anticipated debut as a guest conductor with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
