Trusted, help, not interfere
Starting from 1956, Bernard Haitink (b. 1929, d. 2021) would go on to conduct the Concertgebouw Orchestra over 1,500 times. ‘Every time with him [Haitink] the orchestra sounded warmer, deeper and richer, from the first moment he started to rehearse. How he did that is difficult to tell … he always gave us musicians the feeling he trusted you, that he was there to help, not to interfere.’ said principal trombonist Jörgen van Rijen during the memorial concert in February 2022.
A tribute to one of the most captivating and celebrated conductor–orchestra partnerships ever.
