Mahler's Third and our chief conductors
Gustav Mahler led the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the performance of his Third Symphony in 1903. Since then, conducting this work has been a must for each of our chief conductors. This month our future chief conductor Klaus Mäkelä is presenting his interpretation. But how did the Third sound under Van Beinum, Haitink, Chailly, Jansons and Gatti? Listen to the differences.
Unfortunately, we can no longer listen to Mengelberg’s 33 performances with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Recordings of all subsequent chief conductors are available, however.
