Richard Strauss’s lyrical Oboe Concerto in D major was composed in 1945, near the end of his life. Often described as his “Indian summer,” Strauss’s concerto showcases the oboe’s expressive qualities. Recorded live at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the performance by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s principal oboe Ivan Podyomov and conductor Semyon Bychkov captures the nostalgia of Strauss’s autumnal concerto perfectly.
