Nuno Coelho
Born in Porto in 1989, Nuno Coelho studied violin in Klagenfurt and Brussels, and conducting at the Zurich University of the Arts with Johannes Schlaefli. As an assistant, he has worked with Bernard Haitink, Susanna Mälkki, Andris Nelsons, and Gustavo Dudamel, among others.
He was awarded First Prize at the 2017 Cadaqués International Conducting Competition, winning him engagements with over thirty major orchestras in Europe, Asia and South America over the next three seasons.
Assistant conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra from 2015-17, Nuno Coelho returned to the orchestra in 2018 for a concert at The Concertgebouw. In June of that year, he gained attention as a contender of the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s Ammodo Conducting Masterclass, led by Daniele Gatti. The same summer, he was appointed guest conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon. As an LA Phil Dudamel Fellow of the 2018/19 season, Mr Coelho led the Los Angeles Philharmonic on numerous occasions, presenting a world premiere as part of the orchestra’s Green Umbrella new music series. In the theatre, he has conducted productions of Verdi’s La traviata, Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, and Dvořák’s Rusalka.
