Otto Tausk

Otto Tausk is Music Director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Previously he held the same function at Holland Symfonia in the Netherlands (2007-2012) and at the Theater und Orchester Sankt Gallen (Switzerland, 2012-2018) where he conducted numerous operas including the world premiere of Annas Maske by David Hefti, the Swiss premiere of George Benjamin’s Written on Skin, Korngold’s Die tote Stadt, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, and Wagner’s Lohengrin

Tausk guest conducted orchestras around the world, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Diego Symphony, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. His BBC Proms debut was in 2018, when he conducted the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in Richard Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben. At the Dutch National Opera he led several opera productions, including the world premieres of Micha Hamel’s Caruso in Cuba (2019) and Michel van der Aa’s Upload

He previously conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf (School and Family concerts in 2012 and a recording for a prize-winning educational app) and works by several Dutch and Belgian composers (December 2012), returning in 2016 for works by Diepenbrock, Dutilleux and Turnage. 

Born in Utrecht, Otto Tausk initially studied violin with Viktor Liberman and Istvan Parkanyi. He then studied conducting with Kenneth Montgomery and Jurjen Hempel, and with Jonas Aleksa in Vilnius, Lithuania.
