first violin
Christian van Eggelen
Born in Delft in 1976, Johan Christian van Eggelen was given a small violin by his father when he was six years old. He won the Prix de la Presse at the Belgian broadcaster RTBF Jeunes Solistes Competition at the age of fourteen and third prize at the 1999 Ibolyka Gyarfas Violin Competition.
He went on to study with A. Leon Ara in Brussels, with Valery Klimov in Saarbrücken and with Stefan Picard at the Berlin Musikhochschule Hanns Eisler. There he won the DAAD prize for the best foreign student.
Van Eggelen worked as a substitute with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Munich Kammerorchester and the Berlin Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester before joining the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2002.
Since 2015 Christian has been playing a Guadagnini from 1763, which was provided to him on loan by a private benefactor through Foundation Concertgebouworkest.
