Caroline Strumphler
Caroline Strumphler is a Dutch violinist. She leads the second violin section of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra since 1989.
She studied in Hanover with Ramy Shevelov, in Amsterdam with first concertmaster of the Concertgebouw Orchestra Herman Krebbers, and in Boston with Masuko Ushioda. Alongside her violin studies in Germany and the Netherlands she participated in specialized authentic interpretation courses and took Baroque classes with specialists including Jaap Schröder.
She participated in masterclasses with Yehudi Menuhin, Kyung Wha Chung, Felix Andreyewski, the Alban Berg Quartet and the Tokyo String Quartet.
With her string quartet she won the New England Chamber Music Competition, and as part of a violin-piano duo she won the recital competition of the Sweelinck Conservatoire in Amsterdam. As primarius of the Euridice Quartet she toured Germany and Spain and performed in all the major concert halls of the Netherlands.
As a guest artist, Caroline Strumphler performed on a regular basis with such ensembles as Ensemble Modern, the Amsterdam Bach Soloists, Ebony Band, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and the Viotta Ensemble.
As a soloist she performed with the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands and the Hochschulorchester Hannover, and made tours of Japan with Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante.
Ms. Strumphler’s educational activities include coaching the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands, Netherlands Student Orchestra, and teaching students of both the Academy of the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the orchestra’s youth project, Young. She gives masterclasses all over the world and has been coaching youth orchestras in Europe, the USA, South Africa and Argentina.
Since 2010 she plays on a Vincenzo Ruggieri built around 1700, an instrument owned by Foundation Concertgebouworkest, which was previously played by former second concertmaster Johan Kracht and current concertmaster Liviu Prunaru.
