Manfred Honeck
Manfred Honeck, the Austrian music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, played violin and viola in his youth, and was a member of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. He studied conducting with Claudio Abbado, serving as his assistant with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra.
In the early 1990s, Honeck regularly led productions at the Zurich Opera House, and his first permanent appointment was as chief conductor of the Norwegian National Opera. He held similar posts in the following decades with the MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Staatsoper Stuttgart.
In May 2006, Honeck first conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, which appointed him as its music director starting from the 2008–9 season.
Honeck has made guest appearances with all the major US orchestras, including those of Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco – as well as the Orchestre de Paris, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.
He has led opera productions at the Komische Oper Berlin, La Monnaie in Brussels and the Salzburg Festival. In 2018, the jury of the International Classical Music Awards hailed him as Artist of the Year.
Honeck first conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra in January 2004, returning in 2016 and 2018, most recently to perform works by Wagner, Bruckner and Berg.
