Joris van den Berg
The Dutch cellist Joris van den Berg is a member of the Concertgebouw Orchestra since August 2017, holding the position of associate solo cello since March 2023. He studied under Quirine Viersen and Godfried Hoogeveen at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and continued his studies under Ralph Kirshbaum and Gary Hoffman at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester – where he received the Gold Medal, the highest award in performance, and an International Artist Diploma – and at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne with Frans Helmerson.
Having won the first prize at the first edition of the Dutch National Cello Competition in Amsterdam in 2006, Joris van den Berg made his Concertgebouw debut performing with Amsterdam Sinfoniëtta under the baton of David Geringas. Together with his regular pianist Martijn Willers he was prize-winner at the International Johannes Brahms Competition 2008 in Austria. The duo’s first album, Dialogo, with works by Prokofiev, Lutosławski and Britten, was released in 2013. Joris van den Berg was awarded the 2014 Dutch Classical Talent Award, bringing him and Martijn Willers to the Netherland’s most important concert halls during the 2013-14 season.
Joris van den Berg performed concertos with The Hague Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata and the Flanders Symphony Orchestra, and chamber music with such musicians as Liza Ferschtman, Philippe Graffin en Daniel Hope. He plays a Giovanni Grancino cello from 1703 with a N.L. Tourte 'L’Ainé' bow, both being placed at his disposal by the Dutch National Musical Instrument Foundation.
