1st principal second violin
Alessandro Di Giacomo
Alessandro Di Giacomo is first principal second violinist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra since October 2023, having served as tutti second violinist since August 2022.
Di Giacomo was born in Salerno in a family of violinists. At the age of four, he took up the instrument himself. At fifteen he graduated from the Avellino conservatoire with honours. He continued his studies with Francesco De Angelis, then with Stefano Pagliani until his enrolment at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano in 2018, where he completed his master’s degrees under the guidance of Alessandro Moccia. During his studies he won major prizes in a number of international competitions.
Di Giacomo’s orchestra career began when he won his first audition, aged seventeen, for a position in the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano. Soon afterwards, he joined the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala di Milano, with which he briefly collaborated. In 2019 he won the audition for first violinist of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra in Turin, where he started in January 2020. A month later, Di Giacomo was accepted in the Academy of the Concertgebouw Orchestra for the 2021-22 season. During his academy season he won the audition for a position in second violin section and, having served as tutti second violinist for a year, in October he acquired the position of first principal second violinist.
Di Giacomo plays the ex-Balokovic Guarneri del Gesú from 1729, owned by a private maecenas and received on loan through the Foundation Concertgebouworkest. Previously, this violin was played by Henk Rubingh.
