About this concert
"In Amsterdam, I have never been before. I have traveled a lot, but the Dutch capital is still on my list," according to composer Ellen Reid. This season, Reid is the Composer in Residence at the Concertgebouw. Composer and Sound Artist, that's how the American describes herself. "In that way, the world becomes bigger for me, my playing field more expansive. The word 'composer' traditionally evokes an image that feels a bit old-fashioned and limiting to me. For me, it's about shaping sound and how you experience that sound."
Ellen Reid creates sound installations, loves electro-acoustic music, and engages with sound in various ways. This evening, she combines her own work with that of other composers who resonate with her in the Recital Hall of the Concertgebouw. "The most important thing is that the evening tells a story. Every piece of music is about something, but as a listener, you determine what that is. Everyone experiences the concert in their own way and takes something different from the pieces. Good music invites you to do so."
