About this concert
A refreshing mix of musical styles! Four string players from the Concertgebouw Orchestra perform together with clarinet virtuoso Martin Fröst (from Sweden), jazz singer Graziella Hunsel Rivero (an Amsterdam native with Surinamese roots), and the Spanish pianist Daahoud Salim, who created a special new arrangement of a famous American spiritual, Deep River. Some 120 years ago, British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor arranged the same melody. He also composed the wonderfully romantic and inventive Clarinet Quintet. The African-American connection will be infused with jazz swing in the immortal songs of clarinet legend Benny Goodman, such as In a Sentimental Mood and Ain’t Misbehavin’.
Martin Fröst is artist in residence of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra during the 2022-23 season.
