About this concert

The Concertgebouw Orchestra is looking forward to a special residency at the Essen Philharmonie, contributing three symphonic concerts and three chamber music concerts in the 2022-23 season. This exciting collaboration kicks off with a festive programme conducted by Alain Altinoglu.

Two nonconformist soloists from the north will be sharing the stage: the Swedish clarinettist Martin Fröst, artist in residence with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, artist in residence with the Essen Philharmonie.

The programme, chock full of energetic dance rhythms, kicks off with John Adams’s exuberant Short Ride in a Fast Machine. The Norwegian dance rhythms in the finale of Grieg's Piano Concerto anticipate the colourful mosaic of dances for clarinet and orchestra after the interval, which eventually blends seamlessly with radiant music from Bernstein’s West Side Story – quite rightly an audience favourite.
