The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has established itself as one of the very best symphony orchestras in the world. We constantly strive for excellence in our work! Our artistic and business activities, procedures and communications are all a testament to that aim. As a result, the orchestra can continue to present itself globally as a leader in its field. Our aim is to ensure that the orchestra’s workforce – made up of 120 musicians from 25 countries and 50 members of staff – enjoy the work they do. We give 125 concerts a year under the direction of such leading conductors as our chief conductor designate Klaus Mäkelä.
Artistic Affairs Department
Our colleagues in the Artistic Affairs Department attend to the programming, artistic planning and production of the orchestra’s activities, as well as education, the Academy, chamber music, the orchestra library and day-to-day operations both on- and offstage.
We are looking for an
ARTISTIC ADVISER
0.8 or 1.0 FTE
What is your role?
As the artistic adviser, you will support the artistic director, giving detailed advice on artistic policy, musicological aspects and practicability.
What will you be doing?
- You support the artistic director in implementing the artistic policy.
- You provide musicological advice and information as needed.
- You advise on the use of scores as needed.
- You research the dramatic structure of concert programmes and the background of specific works.
- You develop (translate) programmes (scores) into information on tasks and activities.
- You are responsible for producing the draft list of activities.
- You keep the list of activities up to date in the planning system, as well as the overview of programme information (work data).
- You prepare and report on the Artistic Consultations meetings.
- You manage composition commissions and liaise with composers, publishers and co-commissioners.
- At the request of the artistic director, you develop artistic/dramatic concepts for special productions, taking over the management of productions as required.
What candidate are we looking for?
A dedicated, enthusiastic colleague with:
- An understanding of artistic policy development
- A broad knowledge of the classical repertoire (symphonic and otherwise)
- A practical and theoretical knowledge of music
- A knowledge of repertoire development as it relates to other musical and cultural developments
- A knowledge of music libraries, archives and music publishers
- Excellent musical notation skills and the ability to analyse orchestral scores and translate them into organisational tasks
- Experience in a similar position
- Experience with data management and/or orchestral scheduling software
In addition:
- You possess a high level of professional and intellectual ability.
- You have strong communication and organisational skills.
- You have good advisory skills.
- You have an excellent knowledge of both spoken and written English and German.
- You speak, or are willing to learn, Dutch.

- A salary starting at €4,078 and up to €5,596 gross per month based on a 36-hour working week commensurate with your knowledge and experience, plus 8% holiday pay
