Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 2

Kristian Bezuidenhout and John Eliot Gardiner, both specialised in the historical performance practice, perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Concertgebouworkest. An “authentic” performance on modern instruments.

Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2

Ludwig van Beethoven composed the Piano Concerto No. 2 for himself to perform at his Viennese public concert debut in 1795. The Second Piano Concerto was a triumph. Beethoven had, however, not a particularly high opinion of the piece, as he offered it to his publisher for half the price that he received for a piano sonata, stating that it was “a pianoforte concerto that I do not consider to be one of my best works”, although he added knowingly that “it will certainly not be a disaster for you if you publish it.”

Since winning both first prize and the audience prize at the 2001 Bruges Fortepiano Competition, Bezuidenhout has given recitals, concerts and chamber music performances all over the world on historical as well as modern instruments.
