Wagner: Siegfried Idyll
Before studying conducting, Andris Nelsons embarked on a musical career as a trumpet player with the orchestra of the Latvian National Opera. He has also won various prizes as a singer. In 2001, he moved to St Petersburg to study conducting with Alexander Titov. He studied privately with Mariss Jansons starting a year later. Andris Nelsons is music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 2014. In addition, he will be Kapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig with effect from the 2017/18 season. Earlier, he served as music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (2008-2015), the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie (2006-2009) and the Latvian National Opera in his native city of Riga (2003-2007). The Latvian conductor also works regularly with the Berlin and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich and the New York Philharmonic. He has led productions at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London; the Metropolitan Opera in New York; and the Vienna State Opera. He has also made various guest appearances at the Bayreuth Festival.
