Andris Nelsons
Born in Riga, Andris Nelsons grew up in a family of professional musicians. He embarked on a musical career as a trumpet player with the orchestra of the Latvian National Opera. In 2001, he moved to St Petersburg to study conducting with Alexander Titov. He studied privately with Mariss Jansons starting a year later.
Nelsons served as chief conductor of Latvian National Opera in his native city of Riga from 2003 to 2007 and led the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie from 2006 to 2009. From 2008 to June 2015, he triumphed as music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
He makes regular guest appearances with the Berlin and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He has successfully led productions at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London; the Vienna State Opera; and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Nelsons has also made various guest appearances at Bayreuth.
Since appearing with the Concertgebouworkest for the first time in 2008, Nelsons has returned very regularly, conducting the orchestra both in Amsterdam and on tour. Among the highlights are Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade in 2011, performances of Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer in concert version in 2013, Shostakovich’s Symphonies Nos. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,10 and 11. In January 2020 he returned for an exceptional performance of Skrjabin's Prometheus with a prominent role for light organ as originally envisioned by the composer.
