Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances

Andris Nelsons leads the Concertgebouworkest in Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances. Sergei Rachmaninoff created a magnificent orchestral sound, dramatic contrasts and occasionally daring combinations of timbres.

Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances

Sergei Rachmaninoff composed the Symphonic Dances as a showpiece for The Philadelphia Orchestra and their chief conductor Eugene Ormandy. Rachmaninoff created a magnificent orchestral sound, dramatic contrasts and occasionally daring combinations of timbres. Not everything in the Symphonic Dances, however, is about external display, Rachmaninoff also had an underlying theme. He had initially intended to give the three dances the titles of Noon, Twilight and Midnight as a symbol of the various periods of life – and of his own life in particular.

Andris Nelsons, conductor

Andris Nelsons made his debut with the Concertgebouworkest in 2008 and now conducts the orchestra regularly. Nelsons studied with Alexander Titov in St. Petersburg and took private lessons with Mariss Jansons. Having conducted the North West German Philharmonic, the Latvian National Opera and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Andris Nelsons currently is music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
