The Heart of Rachmaninoff

Alexander Gavrylyuk won the 1999 Vladimir Horowitz Competition at the age of fifteen. He truly established a reputation for himself the following year, when, as the youngest participant, he won first prize at the Hamamatsu Competition in Japan. Ever since, he has been in high demand as a performer in Japan, having also recorded his first two CDs there.

His international career has now truly taken flight, with acclaimed performances at Lincoln Center, the Sidney Opera House and the Hollywood Bowl. Gavrylyuk won first prize, the gold medal and the special award for best performance of a classical concerto at the 2005 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition.

Gavrylyuk has since performed with many leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Concertgebouworkest. In 2009, he recorded the complete Prokofiev piano concertos with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Vladimir Jurowski was born in Moscow, where he attended the conservatory. After his family moved to Germany in 1990, he continued his studies in Dresden and Berlin. Since 2001, Jurowski has held the position of music director of the Glyndebourne Festival Opera to great acclaim. After serving as principal guest conductor for four years, he was appointed principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2007.

Vladimir Jurowski is also principal artist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and music director of the Russian National Orchestra. He has made guest appearances with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
