Michael Waterman, 1st violin

Violinist Michael Waterman is the fifth in an unbroken line of Waterman violinists to have joined the ranks of the Concertgebouworkest. His grandfather, Frits Waterman, was a member from 1950 to 1970; followed by his uncle, Frits Joël Waterman, his mother, Cleora Waterman and his father, Robert Waterman.

Michael Waterman started studying the violin with his father. He went to study with Peter de Leeuw at the Amstelveen Music School. From 2000 to 2006 he studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory van Amsterdam from 2000 to 2006 first with Lex Korff de Gidts, then with Alexander Kerr (principal violinist of the Concertgebouworkest from 1996 to 2006). Between 2006 and 2008, Michael Wateman continued his studies with Kerr at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

He has participated in masterclasses with Christian Tetzlaff and William Preucil and has had chamber music coachings with Janos Starker and Sylvia Rosenberg.

Waterman joined the first violin section of the Concertgebouworkest in 2010.

In 2012 he was appointed artistic and managing director of the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra.
